Kawazu Sakura Higashi Ooyama and Taiko Lion Dance Performance

The popular "Higashi Ooyama Kawazu Sakura Festival", where you can see early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms in Hamamatsu, will be held from February 18 (Saturday) to March 12 (Sunday), 2023.

Kawazu Sakura Higashi Ooyama is one of the largest rows of Kawazu cherry trees in the western area of Shizuoka Prefecture.

The festival will be held as planned even with the cold weather continuing for several days. The best time to see them is expected to be around the end of February to early March.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, they serve local vegetables such as cabbage, mandarin oranges, and chrysanthemum potatoes, as well as handmade pickles. There are also stalls that sell light meals such as udon, oden, yakisoba, and even cotton candy and ice cream.

On weekdays, the number of stalls will be slightly reduced as the stalls will be run by volunteers.

It's nice to sit on the benches and tables around the stalls to eat while watching the cherry blossoms.

Not only delicious food, last weekend and the next weekend, there is a group of energetic young people called Creative Taiko Doshu Kihou -KIHOU-  an Eisa group in Hamamatsu City, performing Japanese traditional taiko dance and lion dance.

It was my first time seeing this lion dance from Okinawa, and I was amazed. I almost forgot that there were people wearing costumes under those lions.

The dance performance is not just a physical phenomenon, it’s a social, cultural, and historical product. The effect of the dance is fascinating. The music accompaniment holds you in tension and the dance makes you feel in the realm of Samurai in the Edo period.

On March 4th at 13:00 they will perform beside the tents.

On March 5th at 9:00, they will perform at the big square next to the yellow flowers field.

Kawazu cherry blossoms are blooming beautifully. Under the blue sky, pink flowers bloom on the branches that have been stretched out vigorously and a vast field of yellow mustard flowers or nanohana. When the weather is fine, some people look up and admire the exquisite color contrast.

That is what Kawazu Sakura in Higashi Oyama looks like from afar.

Approximately 400 Kawazu cherry trees line both the north and south banks of the Hana River every year, making it a cherry blossom viewing spot that attracts many visitors from inside and outside the city.

Field Mustard flowers or nanohana (菜の花) is one of the Winter flowers in Japan.

They are sown in consideration of the season so that they reach their peak at the same time as the as Kawazu sakura blossoms!

The kawazu sakura flowers are larger than common cherry blossoms, and the color is dark pink.
