Before the pandemic, every year during the Golden Week holiday, for 3 days in a row (May 3rd, 4th, 5th) Hamamatsu Matsuri (Festival) is being held. During the pandemic, it was canceled or closed to the public. Fortunately, this year they decided to hold the Hamamatsu kite festival with some outline of the event is slightly changed.
Daytime kite flying will be held from May 3rd to 5th from 10AM to 3PM, however, drinking alcohol and thread cutting battles are prohibited.
Last year, trumpets and other sounds and musical accompaniment were prohibited, but this year will be allowed in the daytime and only at the kite-flying venue.
The night-time palace stalls will not be held in the Hamamatsu downtown area, but it seems that it can be done based on the judgment of the residents' association in each neighborhood. If you are interested to know more about the Hamamatsu festival and what it was like before the pandemic, I recommend you to visit the Hamamatsu Festival pavilion.
On April 17th, I decided to visit Hamamatsu Festival Pavilion. Coincidentally that day is Kite's day, I received a Hamamatsu kite as a present.
It is located right next to the Nakatajima sand dunes entrance. The admission fee is 400 yen for adults and FREE for children. Show your Hamamatsu Castle ticket and get a 100 yen discount.
Hamamatsu festival pavilion has a big collection of kites on display. There are various old-fashioned kites and modern kites, it's fun to see.
There are also some palace stalls like those at festivals.
