Sumatakyo yume no tsuri bashi 寸又峡夢の吊り橋

Another tourist spot not so far from Hamamatsu, is Sumatakyo yume no tsuribashi which means Dream suspension bridge.
It is located in Kawanehoncho, Haibara District, Shizuoka. It takes about 2,5 hours drive from Hamamatsu to reach Sumatakyo onsen and followed by 2 km walk to the bridge. It was a bit tiring but all worth it because of the gorgeous scenery and experience.

You should wear comfortable sport shoes and be prepared to climb 320 steps of stairs after you crossed the bridge and to walk 2 kilometres on mostly flat road. These stairs are little a bit tough. Normally it takes about 90 minutes for the round trip hiking course.

But if you want to take rest or need time to take photos, you'll spend more time.
Good photo spot of the bridge is located on the way back of round trip route.
There you can capture a distant view of whole bridge.

The bridge is 90 meters long and spread over the Oma Dam Lake.

There's also a bus to go there.

When there are many visitors, the route become one way.

I suggest not to visit after the typhoon or heavy rainy days, because the water become muddy and the color turn brown grayish.

This bridge is popular among couples. That is why there were many couples in the queue. They believe that dreams will come through for couples that make wishes in the middle of the suspension bridge.
It was a bit scary being that high up, you can see all the way down. The bridge is wobbly but that's the thrill of this adventure. You'll feel like Indiana Jones.
It rocks back and forth and bounces up and down. The walk way is narrow too, just 2 planks of wood. But it's a lot of fun and view is something special. Come and you'll understand why so many people are drawn here.

We recommend you to visit in the morning (the earlier the better).
There will be less people, so you don't have to wait to cross. Or if you have time, you can visit on weekdays. A local person said that you might have to wait for two hours to cross the bridge on some holidays or peak season/Autumn. I guess it's better to go there during autumn where the green leaves turns red, yellow and orange.

This place is free of charge and a great hiking place with beautiful view.

There is also Oigawa Railway in town, where a famous steam locomotive like Thomas train and friends operates.

Before you go home, make sure to stop by at the souvenir shop. They have various delicious Japanese traditional snacks.

To go there by train from Hamamatsu station:

From Hamamatsu station board the Tokaido Line and get off at Kanaya station. Then board the Oigawa Tetsudo Line for Senzu station.
From here you will take a bus for Sumatakyo Onsen Town

After that you must walk for about 30 minutes (because the road is too narrow for car) to arrive at the suspension bridge.
